Alex Beckinsale
South Australian Visual Artist & Educator
Welcome
Alex Beckinsale is an early career artist whose work is inspired by strange narratives, folklore, and popular culture.
Her practice primarily focuses on utilising both digital and traditional drawing to represent the human figure. She works both from live models and photographs as references to create her drawings.
Alex spends her time between her home studio and teaching art workshops for teens and adults around South Australia.
Workshops
Alex is extremely passionate about helping others learn more about the world of art and drawing.
She specialises in teaching people both traditional and digital drawing, with a focus on figurative art, character illustration and life drawing.
She runs a number of of workshops and courses throughout South Australia. She does this both independently and through local arts institutions such as Adelaide Central School of Art, Carclew, the Art Gallery of South Australia and more…
Upcoming Workshop -
Saturday 11 April + Saturday 18 April - 10 am - 3 pm
Join Alex and local South Australian cosplayer @cheshrae for this new 2x Saturday course. Designed especially for artists who enjoy working from life and pop culture references.
In the mornings Alex will introduce a range of techniques based in historical approaches & drawing techniques. You’ll utilise dramatic Baroque style lighting, look closer into composition and developing your own personal drawing style. Then in the afternoons you’ll have the opportunity to apply the techniques to drawing Cheshrae as she sits in full cosplay. Starting with a handful of short poses you’ll then spend the majority of the time working on one longer drawing that allows you to capture the artistry in her cosplay.
Saturday 11 April:
Discover classical approaches to creating portrait compositions and dramatic tonal ranges while capturing likeness and detail.
Saturday 18 April:
Learn more about drawing fabric folds, clothing and drapery both on and around the figure and how this can be used to enhance classical compositional design.
Required Materials:
Sketch Kit (pencils, erasers, charcoal (optional), coloured pencils/pastels (optional)
White pencil or white conte/pastel pencil
Sketchbook (A4 or A3)
1 sheet of A1 mid-tone paper (can be grey, purple, maroon, or green. Avoid highly saturated colours as these will be too intense for the drawing.)
All other materials are provided
Traditional Drawing
Alex trained as a traditional artist during her four year BVA (Hons) degree at Adelaide Central School of Art.
Art school reinforced her love of the discipline and techniques of observational drawing, especially that of charcoal and pastel figurative work.
Alex currently works primarily in these mediums, but also creates graphite and ink works.
Digital Drawing
Digital drawing first became part of Alex’s practice in 2016. Since then it’s flexibility and possibilities have made it an invaluable part of her studio work. She utilises the medium to create works for exhibitions, teaching demos, resources, illustrations and to plan compositions for her traditional drawings.
Life drawing has become an increasingly important aspect of Alex’s practice.
The practice of working from life has increased Alex’s knowledge of human anatomy and how to draw the figure with accuracy.
She regularly runs beginner - intermediate courses in both nude and clothed life drawing. If you’re interested in learning life drawing from Alex check out her upcoming workshops.
